Both the Jets (6-2-2) and the Islanders (4-2-2) are coming off decisive victories and each look to keep rolling tonight. Each team has earned a point in all but their first two games of the season.
The Jets appear to have an advantage in terms of flow of play. Per Evolving Hockey, the Jets rank 8th in score/venue adjusted shot share (corsi) while the Islanders sit at 27th. Expected goal share is a different story, where the Jets and Islanders sit at 18th and 19th respectfully. Both teams have scored more than expected and been scored on less than expected relative to the chances they’ve given up.
It’s been no secret for a number of years now, the Islanders don’t mind conceding possession and shots as long as they’re not giving up high danger chances. They’ve done somewhat well at this so far but not great. They have had to rely on Ilya Sorokin a fair amount.
With both teams due for some regression to the mean, it should be interesting to see who comes out on top.
