Update On Contract Talks Between Jets & Rutger McGroarty
Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press recently provided an update on the contract standoff between the Winnipeg Jets and their 20-year-old prospect, Rutger McGroarty. Drafted 14th overall, McGroarty has declined to sign an entry-level deal with the Jets, opting instead to return to the University of Michigan for the upcoming season. He believes he is NHL-ready, while the Jets prefer he starts with their AHL affiliate to further develop his skills. McGroarty's decision to return to college is seen as a strategic move to enhance his value, both to the Jets and on the trade market. Multiple trade discussions, including a close call with the Washington Capitals during the NHL Draft, have taken place but no deal has materialized.
