Insider: Thatcher Demko Will NOT Be A Vancouver Canuck Next Season
The Vancouver Canucks this past week handed out a sizeable long-term contract to goaltender Kevin Lankinen, who has saved their season after a last-minute signing during training camp. So what does all this mean for Thatcher Demko, the Vezina Trophy runner-up and Canucks starter and one of the best goalies in the league the previous several seasons?According to insider Frank Seravalli on Daily Faceoff, Lankinen's five-year, $4.5 million AAV likely means the end of the line for Demko in B.C.:I think you only hand out a contract like that (to Lankinen) if you have an indication that things are going sideways (with Demko), either by injury, or by pure change of scenery. So... Will Thatcher Demko be a Vancouver Canuck next season? My answer is no.Demko has a $5 million cap hit for one more season after this one, and despite an injury-racked playoff last spring and the current regular season, he's been a Vezina candidate for most of the last few seasons, a two-time All-Star and had a .918 save percentage last season. "Will he ever be the same again," after his mysterious knee injury suffered last spring, asked Seravalli? It should be noted that the current issue that's landed him back on IR this week is not related. Demko, though, has only gone 6-6-3 with an .891 Sv% when he has played this season. But there would almost certainly be some teams that would be anxious to take their chances on Demko if the Canucks do indeed look to move him. Photo: © Bob Frid-Imagn Images...
