Red Wings 2, Islanders 1: Late Raymond goal sinks Isles

The Islanders once again couldn’t hold a third period lead and failed to pick up an overtime point in Detroit. Remember when Islanders-Red Wings games were kind of wacky? That 5 minute major that the Islanders scored multiple goals on, the time Josh Bailey got into a fight...
Now they’re just fairly depressing (and even worse, boring!) The New York Islanders got outplayed in Detroit, and could only beat Alex Lyon once on an early Simon Holmstrom goal. They were out-shot and largely out-played throughout the game, but still managed to hold on to a one goal lead thanks to Ilya Sorokin, until things fell apart in the last 5 minutes of the third period.
Even though the Isles are still dealing with some key injuries, this is just not good enough for a team that claims to be competitive.

First Period
Ryan Pulock took a hooking penalty early, giving an opportunity to a strong Red Wings power play, but the Islanders were able to kill it despite some shakiness at the end.
Shortly after the power play, Simon Holmstrom redirected Scott Mayfield’s shot past Alex Lyon, giving the Islanders the lead and finally breaking Lyon after the last game back in October.
Mayfield took an awkward hit in the corner and seemed to hurt his shoulder, but he was alright to play the rest of the game.
Lyon made a big save on a Kyle Palmieri shot set up by a nifty pass from Max Tsyplakov, and Ilya Sorokin stopped a good Alex DeBrincat chance.
Second Period
The Islanders had to kill off another early-period penalty when Alex Romanov put the puck over the glass and was called for delay of game, and then not long after, Pierre Engvall was called for slashing, and the Islanders were able to kill that penalty, too.
Ilya Sorokin made some good saves, and Alex Romanov blocked Dylan Larkin’s shot, but it was another low-event Islanders-Red Wings period of hockey.
Third Period
Christian Fischer was called for tripping, sending the Isles to the power play, but they couldn’t convert on the man advantage.
With 5 minutes left in the period, Jonatan Berggren tied the game up after getting the puck when Alex Romanov’s stick broke, leading to a 2 on 1 that Berggren converted on.
Then, with 51 seconds left, the puck bounced to Lucas Raymond in the slot, and he put it past Sorokin to give the Red Wings a late lead.
Up Next
Next, the Islanders head back home to UBS Arena to take on the St. Louis Blues. It’ll be the first game at home since November 9th, putting an end to this very mediocre road trip.
