3 Potential Trade Destinations For Penguins' Karlsson

1 day ago  /  NHL Trade Rumors

It's no secret that the Pittsburgh Penguins are going to need changes and have work to do this offseason. They have to move out a contract or two, and a player that hasn't really fit since being acquired is Erik Karlsson. He is still a very good defenseman, but it is a lot of cap space the Penguins are using on an offensive d-man that can do the job Kris Letang has done for many years. Whether a move is done at the draft, before, or after, here are some trade destinations for the future Hall of Fame defenseman.Calgary FlamesThe Calgary Flames may look to move Rasmus Andersson in the offseason as there were rumors this was a possibility ahead of the trade deadline this season. The team just tied the NHL record for finishing with the most points and missing the playoffs. They are right there and are only going to get better with some of the young talent on the way. To kick them up a notch, acquiring Karlsson and sending Andersson off to Pittsburgh could be beneficial to both sides. There would be more details involved, but ideally both teams could use a change. Calgary doesn't have a true top power play defenseman even though Mackenzie Weegar did well.LA KingsThe same can be said about the LA Kings at this point. Brandt Clarke was used here and there, but Drew Doughty was once again given his spot on the top power play. The Kings' PP was not good this season and it could sink them in the postseason. If they are to dominate in all areas of the game and have the best chance of hoisting the Stanley Cup, the team needs a power-play quarterback that can help bolster the weakest part of their game. Karlsson is signed on for two more years, so it isn't a big commitment, and the Kings will likely not have to pay all of the $10 million AAV the Penguins are paying.Utah Hockey ClubThe Utah Hockey Club is the third team that could have a real positive boost from acquiring a player like Karlsson. They are on the cusp of getting to the playoffs and defensive scoring wasn't exactly at a premium. Mikhail Sergachev led the d-core with 53 points and Michael Kesselring had 29, but no other broke 20. Karlsson could bolster the right side and relieve Sergachev of some of the top power play duties since he's relied on everywhere. There is lots of cap space and an opportunity here.Photo credit: © Kyle Ross-Imagn Images...
