from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- One general manager insists that Calgary centre Elias Lindholm should be the runaway winner of the Selke Trophy, which goes to the NHL’s best defensive forward. He has never finished higher than 10th in Selke voting, but, really, he’s the best defensive player on the league’s second-best defensive team.

- The website nhl.com lists Matthew Tkachuk as a left-winger even though he plays right wing on one of the league’s best lines. For years, the league’s website has listed players’ positions incorrectly and for reasons unexplained never seems to make the rather easy corrections. Tkachuk should battle Marner and Mikko Rantanen for first and second team all-star spots. Tkachuk and Marner are tied in scoring heading into Saturday night, each with 89 points.

- This blows me away: Marner is having the season of his life. And Nashville defenceman Roman Josi is only two points behind him. Two points? How is that even possible?

- There should be no debate about this one: next stop for the retiring Ryan Getzlaf should be the Hockey Hall of Fame.

- Who would be your first team all-star centre in the NHL? McDavid? Matthews? Draisaitl? No easy answers here.

- I was in the Blue Jays clubhouse on Thursday and Friday. I wanted to scream out loud: “I’m in the clubhouse again.” It’s been 25 months since an NHL, NBA, or MLB dressing room has been open to the media. MLB has taken the lead here with open clubhouses. Time for the NHL and NBA to follow suit.

- In November, Doug Wilson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player. And then, almost immediately, he disappeared from the public, taking a leave of absence from his place as general manager of the San Jose Sharks. It isn’t known what kept Wilson away; he chose to handle his situation as privately as possible.
