Talking Hockey On A Sunday Morning

- Jim Hughson, one of Canada’s premier sports broadcasters, is telling people that he has retired. Most recently, Hughson was the No. 1 play-by-play voice at Hockey Night In Canada, and long before that was the voice of the Blue Jays on TSN. He won’t be easily replaced. Rogers Sportsnet, as is their custom, has made no official announcement on his future of the Hall of Fame broadcaster.

- There’s something almost poetic about this: John Ferguson Jr., worst GM in Maple Leafs memory, has signed on as an assistant with the Arizona Coyotes, worst franchise in NHL history.

- What the Maple Leafs need to determine over the next six months in conjunction with Morgan Rielly. Exactly what he is? An irreplaceable star? A superstar? A top-10 NHL defenceman at the age of 27? A bigger name than he is a player? Rielly finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting in 2019. The past two seasons, he has received no Norris votes. His contract is up. It’s determination time for one of the Leafs better people.

- What a horrible time for sports in Detroit: The Red Wings are lousy. The Lions are worse. The Pistons were last in the NBA and the Tigers are 11th in the American League.
