Canucks training camp: 7 things you need to know

The Vancouver Canucks will begin preparations for the 2021 season on Sunday with player physicals, hitting the ice on Monday in advance of their season opener on Jan. 13 The Vancouver Canucks’ 2020-21 training camp opens off-ice on Sunday with the maximum 36 skaters — plus four goalies, for now — they’re allowed under the special rules negotiated by the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association for this pandemic-affected season. The players will undergo a series of exams by team doctors on Sunday.

The team will hit the ice for real on Monday for a bit more than a week of practices before the season begins for real on Jan. 13 in Edmonton.

Those guys will be based in Vancouver and can travel with the team on the road.

The Canucks’ first line was dominant all season in 2019-20 and the 22-year-old pivot is now in his scoring prime so it’s fair to assume he’ll be even better in 2020-21. The runner-up for the Calder Trophy in 2019-20 impressed everyone with his calm demeanour and incredible skating.

Ostensibly the Canucks’ third centre for much of the season, his defensive struggles remain notable.
