4 Players Who Could Retire After 2024-25 Season
Every season players retire from the NHL, whether it be bigger deals and are announced early like Marc-Andre Fleury and Pat Maroon or are quieter and after they can't get a contract in the NHL to continue playing. The following four players who are in their late 30s and have had years of success could be wrapping up their playing careers after this season.Tyson BarrieTyson Barrie wasn't a high pick in the draft, but eventually broke in with high-end talent from the back-end on the Colorado Avalanche. He was a top d-man and a power-play specialist most of his career until things turned sour when he was dealt to the Nashville Predators who didn't have a stable place for him and he started to be scratched. He did find a contract in Calgary this season, but proceeded to eventually be sent to the minors. He is going to be 34 this summer and will find it very tough to get an NHL contract. After earning a lot of money, this long-time NHLer won't likely want to spend anymore time grinding in the AHL.Trevor LewisTrevor Lewis has had a 17-year NHL career (first two were tastes of the NHL) and has spent the majority of it on the LA Kings. The former first round pick in 2006 has spent all but three seasons in LA and is now 38 years old and playing a limited fourth line role. The veteran is averaging just over 10 minutes per game and not getting much penalty killing time either. For a team that is trying to win, the Kings likely won't bring him back and he will probably call it after having won two Stanley Cups as well.Erik JohnsonErik Johnson once again returned to Colorado for one final shot at winning the Stanley Cup. This long-time Avalanche defender has already raised the Cup with Colorado and is 37 years old and in the last year of his deal. He has had a long and successful career and has accomplished what he is going to. I'm not saying he won't be able to find a contract in the NHL, but it may be better to call it a career in his late 30s with the team that drafted him before he ends up having to play games in the AHL.Alec MartinezAlec Martinez isn't playing in the role he once did with the Kings and Vegas Golden Knights, but he knew that signing with the Chicago Blackhawks. He is in more of a mentor role and the $4 million for the season he got paid isn't going to come again from any team. He's won Stanley Cups, but has also seen his ice time shrink to his lowest since 2013-14. Martinez will be 38 in the summer and can easily call it a successful career.Photo credit: © Sergei Belski-Imagn Images...
