Islanders News: QOs issued and not issued with free agency around the corner

One surprising omission from the Islanders qualified list, but that does not necessarily mean he is going anywhere. Yesterday at 5:00 p.m. ET was the deadline for teams to qualify their restricted free agents, and some surprising names did not receive them. Remember, if a team does not qualify an RFA, that RFA becomes a UFA.
The New York Islanders have not made an official announcement as to who they did and did not qualify, but thanks, I’m guessing, to CapFriendly’s source in Central Registry, we know the likely list of qualified and unqualified Islanders.

2014 no. 5 overall pick Michael Dal Colle did not receive a QO. That does not necessarily mean that the Isles don’t want him back; it just means they didn’t want him back at the raise he would have been due with his QO. We’ll see in the coming days whether player and team are parting or hammering out a new contract.

If this is the end for Dal Colle as an Islander, well, it wouldn’t be terribly shocking. He has only eight career goals in over 100 NHL games. [Newsday]

Elsewhere

There are some questions to be answered as we move into free agency, like where the hell is Jack Eichel going to end up. [NHL]
Speaking of Eichel, trade activity is expected to pick up in the coming days. [NHL]
And speaking of free agency, which teams have the most (and least) cap space with which to play ball tomorrow when the clock strikes noon? [The Athletic]
Right, and at which 50 players should these teams throw all that money? Based on the numbers, Dougie Hamilton will be worth whatever contract he receives. [The Athletic]
The Winnipeg Jets re-signed center Paul Stastny to a one-year deal. Keeping it in the family. [NHL]
The Jets also acquired defenseman Brendan Dillon from the Washington Capitals, who need the cap space for Alex Ovechkin’s new deal, for two second-round picks. [NHL]
The Florida Panthers cleared some cap space by sending Anton Stralman and a bunch of picks to the Arizona Coyotes, who continue to take on heavy cap hits to acquire more draft capital. [NHL]
The Panthers used some of that cap space on extending Sam Bennett, whom they acquired from the Calgary Flames at the Trade Deadline last year. [NHL]
The New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks swapped young players in need of fresh starts. [ESPN]
The Detroit Red Wings extended defenseman Marc Staal for another year, saving GM Lou Lamoriello from grabbing him this summer. I’m sure he’ll be a deadline add for another team. [ESPN]
Last year, the Red Wings signed a good defenseman in Troy Stecher after the Vancouver Canucks did not qualify him as an RFA. There is an interesting crop of RFAs-turned-UFAs this year, too, including the Chicago Blackhawks’ Pius Suter, a young-ish center that had a pretty good rookie season. Frankly, I’m surprised Chicago did not qualify him. [The Athletic]
And if you are looking for undervalued UFAs, look no further. Man, what has gone on with Tomas Tatar and the Montreal Canadiens? I bet he’s still pretty good. [Sportsnet]
