On a busy night off the ice for the Blackhawks, they cruised to one of their more easier victories of the season on it with a 6-3 win on the road over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

After a scoreless first period, the second period featured five goals, starting with this one from Wyatt Kaiser at the 7:48 mark:

Notes

Obviously, the big Blackhawks news of the day had little to do with happened during this game, as the object of a probably unfair amount of scorn over the last several seasons is on his way to Florida after Seth Jones was traded to the Panthers. LBR had a lengthy write-up on all angles of this deal, including a deeper dive on Spencer Knight that should offer plenty of encouragement about his future here. Florida gets present assets for a Cup run, Chicago gets future assets for its rebuild. Hard to do anything but tip the cap in Kyle Davidson’s for this excellent deal. Here’s to more trades like that to get this whole thing trending in a more positive direction.

Look, there’s been a lot of griping about Lukas Reichel’s recent benching from this corner of the internet and we don’t need to add to it, here. But that third-period goal is a little bit of everything that makes him an intriguing prospect. The whole thing starts with Reichel anticipating an opponent’s pass in the defensive zone and getting his stick involved to break up the play. He then reads the developing counter, has the speed to pull away everyone else on the ice and finishes the breakaway with his adept hands. Yeah, consistency has been an issue — that’ll happen with young players, though. But there are also so many flashes like that from Reichel which suggests there’s more in him than the Blackhawks have been able to unearth so far. Here’s hoping the next coach has the means to do that, because Reichel isn’t the only forward prospect who may need some guidance along the path of NHL development.

Speaking of flashes from younger players: would be thrilled to see more confident navigations of the offensive zone from Wyatt Kaiser like the one he had on that goal in the second period. With Jones now gone, there are 25 minutes of ice time per game available to someone, and it’d be great if a good chunk of those minutes were nabbed by a guy like Kaiser because of more moments like that one.

Not going to complain too much about the Bertuzzi-Bedard-Athanasiou line here because the Hawks won this game and we’re trying to enjoy it but let’s get it on the record now that this line is a disaster and was hopefully broken up before Bedard returned to his locker stall after the game.

Oh, and that’s now five games without a point for Bedard. Fix this, dammit.

Frank Nazar: still one of the most fun players to watch since the 4 Nations break, if not the most fun player to watch. No points tonight but he drew both penalties that led to the 5-on-3 in the third which iced the game.

Ryan Donato is probably going to be a solid depth piece on some contending team when he’s inevitably traded by the end of the week and he probably could’ve been a fun part of the team here if circumstances were different. He and Teuvo certainly put on a show in this game, with that line — alongside Ilya Mikheyev — scoring three goals at 5-on-5 without being on the ice for one against.

Of the 18 Chicago skaters in this game, eight are probable or possible long-term pieces here: Reichel, Kaiser, Bedard, Dach, Del Mastro, Vlasic, Nazar and Slaggert. Several of those players had standout moments tonight, along with Soderblom in net and we also can’t ignore that Teuvo is likely going to be here for multiple more seasons due to his contract. All adds up to a rather pleasant evening of watching the Blackhawks, which isn’t something we’ve said a whole lot this season, eh?
