Islanders 3*, Flyers 2 (SO): Beauvillier’s pair leads Isles

Two goals from Anthony Beauvillier, two goals from Claude Giroux, and a shootout winner from Mat Barzal were the tallies in a weird game against the Flyers. This was kind of a weird one! The Islanders seemed pretty reluctant to shoot on a goalie who had been objectively the worst in the league as of late, only taking 10 shots through the first two periods. Anthony Beauvillier was able to make the best of that, though, scoring in the first and second to give the Isles a two goal lead.
Claude Giroux scored twice in the third to tie up the game, and in the shootout, Mat Barzal grabbed the winner. But it was nerve-wracking along the way!

First Period
Ross Johnston and Sam Morin fought 3 minutes in, both going off for fighting majors. Ross would leave the game shortly after leaving the penalty box, and wouldn’t return, clearly injured in his (pointless) fight.
One of Morin’s first shifts out of the box saw him go back in, though, after cheap shotting JG Pageau against the boards. The call was interference, but frankly a more strict ref could’ve called it as a boarding major.
On that power play, a fantastic Matt Martin pass found Beauvillier, and he shot it past Carter Hart for the Isles’ first of the game.

The Isles went back to the power play after James van Riemsdyk and Oliver Wahlstrom got tangled up, and van Riemsdyk hit Wahlstrom while both of them were on the ice.
That power play was ineffective, and then it would be the Flyers’ turn on the PP, as Cal Clutterbuck went off for interference. It was then a 5 on 3 as Casey Cizikas was called for high sticking, and the Isles were able to kill both penalties with some big help from Pageau and Sorokin.
Second Period
With just three shots by the Isles in the first period, any shot at all was a big deal - and Wahlstrom got one off on a 2 on 1. Gotta love the fact that this guy just shoots the puck. We need more of that on this team.
Clutterbuck went to the box again for elbowing Giroux, but the Isles killed that penalty too.
Noah Dobson, still recovering from his length COVID layoff, nearly put the puck in his own net, but Sorokin was able to make the save there.
Hart saved a Nick Leddy end to end rush, but he was eventually beaten when Barzal got the puck to Beauvillier, and Beau gave the Isles a two goal lead.

Third Period
Hart made a big save on Ryan Pulock, and the Isles earned a power play on the same sequence when Ivan Provorov hit Barzal in the face when he was left without a stick.
Pulock unfortunately fell down trying to keep the puck in the zone during that power play, and Joel Farabee nearly had a clean short handed chance, but Brock Nelson was able to hustle back to break that up. That was easily the best chance of the power play for either team.
Travis Konecny and Oliver Wahlstrom collided in the corner of the d zone and Wahlstrom fell awkwardly, leaving Konecny enough room to pass the puck off to Giroux, who scored to make it 2-1.
Nelson and Phillipe Myers collided, and Myers went awkwardly into the boards, leaving the game.
Jordan Eberle was tripped up entering the Flyers zone on a rush, drawing a penalty, but he was able to get the puck off to Barzal, who just couldn’t beat Hart.
The Isles wouldn’t have the services of Oliver Wahlstrom on that power play, as he went into the room to get some work done on a facial injury he picked up after the Konecny collision. Hart saved the best look on the PP, a Pulock shot, and the Flyers killed it.
Giroux would tie the game shortly after, scoring off a good pass from Jakub Voracek.
Both Myers and Wahlstrom would return later in the third, and the Isles ended the period with some pressure, but this one would go to OT.
Overtime + SO
There were some good looks for the Islanders early, and then the Flyers held the puck in the offensive zone for a while, keeping Adam Pelech on the ice for over a minute and a half. Mat Barzal drew a penalty with 15 seconds left, but that wasn’t enough time for the Isles to get any really good looks on goal, and we’re off to the shootout.
In the shootout, Eberle went first, missing his attempt, but Sean Couturier hit the post on his reply. Beauvillier’s shot was saved, and Nolan Patrick went too high on his attempt. Oliver Wahlstrom tried to get too fancy with his attempt, and Hart saved that, and Sorokin saved Giroux’s shot. Mat Barzal scored on his shot, and Sorokin saved Voracek’s, winning the Isles the game.
