Islanders News: Simon says sure, I’ll sign here

The bottom sixer with the long reach fits just under the cap. In not surprising but somewhat illuminating news, the Islanders announced that RFA forward Simon Holmstrom has re-signed on a cheap one-year deal, something that’s less than his qualifying offer but guarantees he’ll make an NHL wage even if he’s stashed in AHL Bridgeport next season.
You figure he’ll be on the NHL roster, reprising his bottom six role and maybe some more shorthanded magic, but you never know. Security is a nice thing to have as you seek your seven-year contract.
The deal maybe keeps the Isles under the cap, albeit only accounting for 22 (instead of the usual 23) players.
Simon Holmstrom, signed 1x$0.9M by NYI, is a young defensive bottom six winger. Started off the 23-24 season hot, scoring 5 SHG and shooting 28% in his first 35 games, but predictably cooled off in the second half. For those wondering why #Isles RFA Simon Holmstrom took less than his QO on his one-year deal…His QO was a two-way deal while the deal he signed is one-way.Two way means you make less if in minors. One way means regardless of where you play, you make your NHL salary.— Stefen Rosner (@stefen_rosner) July 16, 2024
Meanwhile, arbitration dates have been announced and Oliver Wahlstrom’s was set for Aug. 1. I know you’re setting your DVR.
Your Memory Moment
That was some series, yes it was. I’ll always believe the Isles advance if T*cker doesn’t take out Peca’s knee.

Not a lot of other NHL news out there but the Blues, who recently signed twice-bought-out Ryan Suter on a minimum deal, announced that Torey Krug, who used his NTC to prevent a trade, may be out long-term with a “pre-arthritic” condition. [NHL]
