Last offseason, notified the Calgary Flames that he had no intention of signing a long-term deal to stay in Calgary. It was the first time in NHL history that two players coming off 100-point seasons were traded for one another. On top of that, he did not want to stay in Calgary long-term, and this trade allowed him to sign a long-term contract elsewhere before the season.
