Insider Makes NHL's Version Of A Luka Doncic Trade
Insider Chris Johnston of The Athletic recently explored what an NHL equivalent of the Luka Doncic trade might look like. In his latest mailbag column, he proposed a blockbuster scenario where the Edmonton Oilers trade Leon Draisaitl to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Mark Stone and a 2029 first-round pick. While acknowledging that the comparison isn’t perfect, Johnston pointed out key similarities, saying, “They’re each among the absolute best players in their respective leagues and will be among their sport’s highest-paid athletes as of next fall. They’re also both just months removed from helping take their teams to the Final, only to fall a little short.”Here’s Leon Draisaitl making unreal backhand passes for 1 minute straight pic.twitter.com/C5Brn9U8Ww— Adam (@OilersAdam) January 25, 2025 Of course, this is all just a hypothetical scenario, but if it a Draisaitl trade did happen, it would raise serious concerns about Connor McDavid’s future in Edmonton. Many believe that Draisaitl’s recent eight-year extension increases the likelihood of McDavid committing long-term, but a move of this magnitude could change everything. “If Draisaitl were moved, all bets would be off about what McDavid would think in terms of his long-term future,” Johnston wrote. Losing Draisaitl, McDavid’s primary running mate, would create major questions about Edmonton’s ability to contend for a Stanley Cup, especially given their heavy reliance on both superstars. For Vegas, landing Draisaitl would instantly bolster their offense, but parting with Stone, their captain and two-way leader, would come with its own risks.Leon Draisaitl, the League's new scoring leader:-38 goals and 81 points in just 54 games pic.twitter.com/D9UaQuHjG9— NHL (@NHL) February 6, 2025 Although Edmonton has no plans to move Draisaitl, Johnston’s hypothetical trade is an interesting one and seems to be a good NHL equivalent to the recent NBA blockbuster move.Photo Credit: Perry Nelson-Imagn Images...
