Plus, an Islanders preview held hostage by Lou! Still just a trickle of actual Islanders-related news these days, but some bigger league news have come over the past few days.
Also...pour one out for Frans Nielsen, for the Red Wings have surely angered the gods by initiating a buyout.
Islanders-ish News

Pity the official site writers who have to preview the Islanders when the only official addition is Richard Panik {wink wink}. [NHL]
Get ready for the Aatu Raty Revenge Tour? [THN]
What are the Isles up to? The same stuff that’s been suggested for several weeks now. [THN]
The Blues still need reinforcement on defense...could they target Scott Mayfield in a Vladimir Tarasenko trade? (Of course, the Isles still need reinforcement on defense, and the cap disparity with those two does not make sense.) [Rutherford @ Athletic]

Happy flashback:

MSG+ showing the #Isles clincher against the Bruins. I don’t think people realize how loud it was inside the Coliseum towards the end of the second period after the Islanders completely dominated. Here’s a reminder: pic.twitter.com/nNpy1YF8kF— Rob Taub (@RTaub_) August 20, 2021

With the #Red Wings settling their Arb case with Adam Erne 4 days ago, the club had access to a second buyout window. As a result, Detroit has opted to buyout 37 year old forward Frans Nielsen.Buyout Breakdown:2021-22: $4,250,0002022-23: $500,000https://t.co/PuBFpDdokW pic.twitter.com/vuFFa24fUe— CapFriendly (@CapFriendly) August 19, 2021

Everywhere

First overall pick Owen Power is staying in college, a rare move for a top-of-the-draft pick, but an understandable one for a guy whose college career has been pandemic-shortened and who was, after all, drafted by the Sabres. [Die By The Blade]
The City of Glendale has reversed the usual order of things and decided it wants to toss the Coyotes out of their arena beginning next season. The city even did a Twitter thread about it (see below). [Five For Howling | Athletic]
Gary Bettman calls it a negotiating ploy, but pretty much anything he says about relocation/threats should be read with a posturing/negotiating grain of salt. [NHL]
On ads finally encroaching on NHL uniforms, where they’ll eventually take over (Only one casino ad per uniform though!) [ESPN+ | THN]
We joke that everything has ads now so chill out, but really...is this such an okay thing? “Everything can potentially be an ad, but not everything should...It was good that the NHL hockey community tried to draw a bright line against advertising on the hockey sweater, and it’s sad that that line has finally fallen. We may never hold another one.” [Chaotic Neutral Zone]
This isn’t exactly groundbreaking as various teams have sold space on their practice jerseys, but Vancouver did it at least twice, in the early ‘90s and the late ‘80s. The league was not pleased. [Province]
Auston Matthews will be on the cover of the EA NHL 22 game, if you care. [NHL]

From my story:- Only one ad per jersey. It can only be placed on left or right shoulders, or left or right chests. - Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and pornographic sponsors are banned. NHL will allow gambling ads on jerseys. (1/2)https://t.co/gagILmbLt0— Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) August 19, 2021

With an increased focus on larger, more impactful events and uses of the city-owned arena, the city of Glendale has chosen to not renew the operating agreement for the Arizona Coyotes beyond the coming 2021-22 season.
