Morning Flurries: First cuts and a scrimmage from Avalanche camp

The competition is heating up. Following the third day of training camp, the Colorado Avalanche announced their first set of cuts. It is a bit surprising to move ahead with four releases before the weekend is over especially with several missing forwards but the focus of this year’s camp is clearly on the battles for open roster spots.
Neal Shea, Briley Wood and Garret Pyke are already signed to AHL contracts and will report to Colorado Eagles camp. Max Curran is returned to the WHL with Tri-City’s season already underway.

What was also notable about Saturday was the introduction of a scrimmage in the first session. This move combined the best players from the previous groups one and two in order to get a look at some plausible lines we might see in preseason.

Ross Colton and Cale Makar scored for their respective teams and then Miles Wood broke the tie with a goal in the shootout.

Sunday will be one more practice session in preparation for the first preseason game. That contest will be against the Dallas Stars at Ball Arena on Monday, September 23rd at 7 p.m. Indications are Dallas will have a stream of the game in their local area on their new Victory+ platform but no word on any availability for Avalanche fans other than the Altitude radio broadcast.
