Islanders Make 1st Waiver Dump; Varlamov Still Out

No surprises with the first batch of waivers. The New York Islanders made their first waivers dump of the season, with no surprises and very likely no players that other teams will claim:
Andy Andreoff
Cole Bardreau
Austin Czarnik
Grant Hutton
Otto Koivula
Paul LaDue
Dmytro Timashov
Mitchell Vande Sompel
Parker Wotherspoon
That’s some AHL vets at forward, some overripe defensive prospects, the still sort of young-ish Koivula (who turned 23 this month) and 25-year-old Timashov, who has the most NHL experience of the group at 45 games. All are ultimately ticketed for the AHL, unless one is claimed or an injury scourge arrives. Andreoff, Czarnik, Hutton and LaDue appeared in Tuesday’s game in Bridgeport.
The Isles will need at least one more waiver dump before they get to their final roster.
Meanwhile, in his media availability, Barry Trotz spoke about the danger for the Lee-Barzal-Palmieri line, and responded to a question with an update on Semyon Varlamov.
As he’s said much of the preseason, they aren’t concerned about Varlamov’s undisclosed injury, but they’d rather hold him out for full healing (so: could very well be mid-body/abdominal/groin area) now rather than miss two weeks in the middle of the season. So Varlamov will not play in the games this week, and expect Cory Schneider — who shut out the Flyers last night — to be available as backup to start the season
