Colorado Eagles

Ivan Ivan added a goal and an assist in the loss. Loveland, CO — After a thrilling come from behind overtime victory, the Colorado Eagles looked to close out the two-game set against the Bakersfield Condors (EDM). Colorado came into tonight in a four-way tie for second place in the division based on points. Another victory would set them up for a key battle next weekend that could separate them from the pack against the Coachella Valley Firebirds (SEA).
The Colorado Avalanche recently added to the Eagles’ arsenal by sending down Ivan Ivan and Tye Felhaber. Colorado native and former Colorado College captain, Bryan Yoon made his Eagles debut last night after being called up from the Utah Grizzlies. The Condors held on tonight as the Eagles fought back to force overtime again. This time Bakersfield scored with a goal that was reviewed and ultimately called a good goal. Here are my takeaways from the 4–3 overtime loss.

I was just saying that the game was slowing down for Ivan.... well here you go!!!!!! Ivan rushes down the ice after the face off win and the pass by Felhaber and throws it into the twine for his first AHL goal of the year #Avs #GoAvsGo #EaglesCountry @MileHighHockey pic.twitter.com/YQLNmJKCmY— Brennan Vogt (@brennan_vogt) January 16, 2025

Takeaways
When Colorado was in the Bakersfield zone, they were doing a great job of holding the puck in their possession. Their passes were on the tape and the cycle was fast. The issue mostly was when Bakersfield could get out of the zone on the rush. The Condors got ahead of the Eagles on the rush and then set up behind the net. Three of Bakersfield’s goals originated from behind the net. Goaltender Trent Miner could not do much with the defense chasing the puck into the corner.
“I just felt like we made smart plays with the puck,” said head coach Aaron Schneekloth. “Put it in areas where we could retrieve it and get it back. And I liked a lot of our possession tonight. I would have liked to see it in the second for sure, a little more attack out of it. Get some traffic on the net, start putting some pucks there. And we were holding onto it and looking for a better play. All the time they did a good job keeping us to the outside. They were clogging up the interior. And in the third the same thing, like we came out hard. I thought we controlled the possession game a lot. Just couldn’t, couldn’t solve their goalie.”

Chase Bradley slips a shot through after a give and go with Ivan along the wall. That's two points on the night for Ivan and Bradley's 9th goal of the year. #Avs #GoAvsGo #EaglesCountry @MileHighHockey pic.twitter.com/vAIeZINo93— Brennan Vogt (@brennan_vogt) January 16, 2025

Ivan played a fantastic game tonight. He was extremely self-critical of his play last night, mentioning that he needed to improve. Tonight, Ivan was strong on the forecheck and led rushes out of the defensive zone. Two of these rushes led to a goal and an assist with two other players that have seen the Avalanche uniform this season, Chase Bradley and Felhaber. Ivan showed amazing patience with the puck, skating around the entire offensive zone at one point.

A beautiful play by the Eagles!!!!!!! Mayer with the stretch pass down to Wagner and then the cross-slot pass for Tynan and the easy feed!!!!! #Avs #GoAvsGo #EaglesCountry @MileHighHockey pic.twitter.com/8JRySCerZr— Brennan Vogt (@brennan_vogt) January 16, 2025

Oskar Olausson has been playing with more physicality all season long. At the end of last season, Olausson had season-ending shoulder surgery and came into training camp fully healthy.
“It was not holding up well,” said Olausson. “which, yeah, that’s why we did what we did, and I always feels good. So it’s just gonna keep building on that.”
Olausson has been keeping his stick on the ice, which has led to more opportunities on the net. During his call-up to the Avalanche, he had several good chances just by doing that. He mentioned it was something that he had been working on.

Upcoming
The Eagles will take on the Coachella Valley Firebirds (SEA) on Saturday at Blue Arena at 7 p.m. MT.
