Sean Behrens inks contract with Colorado

The left handed defenseman leaves DU to join the organization. It took almost a week but the Colorado Avalanche have finally signed University of Denver defenseman and former 2021 61st overall pick Sean Behrens. It is a standard three-year Entry Level Contract which begins in the 2024-25 season.

For now the two-time NCAA champion will start his professional career with the Colorado Eagles on an amateur try-out agreement. As the team is one weekend series away from their postseason play-in round it remains to be seen how long it will take for Behrens to make his pro debut. The 21-year old will hope to make an early impression and get opportunity with the Avalanche as soon as possible, hopefully in the next season.

There was some uncertainty whether or not Behrens would sign now or possibly go back to school for his senior year at DU, possibly paving a path to becoming an Unrestricted Free Agent next August. When his teammates Massimo Rizzo and Shai Buium each inked their NHL contracts earlier in the week that concern increased. It is fairly standard practice for high level NCAA prospects to get burned contract years and immediate NHL games as both Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta received but once the Avalanche regular season concluded it became clear that wasn’t on the table.
With few prospects joining the fold next season there should be increased focus on Behrens and hopefully a big role with the Eagles if he’s in line to impact the Avalanche as they now need help on the left side of their defense.
