WHL shuts down Rockets due to six positive COVID-19 tests, postpones Giants' Wednesday game versus Cougars
The Vancouver Giants’ game Wednesday night against the Prince George Cougars at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops was postponed “out of an abundance of caution” late Wednesday by the WHL after receiving word that four Kelowna Rockets players and two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.
The six positives test results Wednesday followed one positive test result for the Rockets’ cohort on Tuesday. All other test results from the four other B.C. team cohorts came back negative.
The WHL suspended team activities with the Rockets for a minimum of 14 days.
The Giants played the Rockets on Sunday in Kamloops.
The Giants, Cougars, Rockets, Kamloops Blazers and Victoria Royals started up 24-game schedules Friday in hubs in Kamloops and Kelowna. The Giants and Cougars are staying at a hotel in Kamloops. The Royals are at a hotel in Kelowna. The Rockets and Blazers are staying at their billet homes.
Kamloops’s game Tuesday against the Rockets in Kelowna had already been cancelled.
The WHL is paying for additional tests for all 22 teams in its four divisions.
As a result of the suspension of activities for the Rockets, the following B.C. games have been postponed:
• Tuesday, March 30, Kamloops at Kelowna.
• Wednesday, March 31, Vancouver at Prince George.
• Friday, April 2, Kelowna at Prince George.
• Saturday, April 3, Kelowna at Victoria.
• Monday, April 5, Vancouver at Kelowna.
• Wednesday, April 7, Kelowna at Kamloops.
• Saturday, April 10, Prince George at Kelowna.
• Monday, April 12, Victoria at Kelowna.
• Tuesday, April 13, Kelowna at Vancouver.
• Thursday, April 15, Kamloops at Kelowna. ...
