Patrick Kane And Jonathan Toews On The Rebuild In Chicago

After all, Toews and Kane — both turning 34 this year, both with three Stanley Cups to their name — are both signed through next season....

Kane, for his part, seems on board, saying it’d be “a privilege and an honor” to finish his career with the Blackhawks. Even if he’s not exactly thrilled at the idea of another few years of losing, he’s saying the right things.

“As a player, you’re always trying to be in the moment, and I think when you’re playing the game you’re not thinking about, well, this is going to take three years or five years or whatever it is,” Kane said. “You’re always thinking about winning that game, right? Or helping the team win that game. That’s really something you don’t think about as players. Whatever the lineup is, whatever the team looks like, you’re going to go on the ice and try to win. That’s something I think as players you don’t worry about too much.”

Toews, on the other hand, has a lousy poker face. Look, Toews loves Chicago. Toews’ legacy in Chicago matters to him. Toews wants nothing more than to win again in Chicago. But Toews has had a hard time stomaching all the losing, more than most. It was Toews who spoke out of school and fumed about the seemingly sudden decision to start a rebuild heading into last season (a season Toews missed because of his health and a rebuild that was short-circuited after about seven months).

And Toews didn’t exactly embrace the idea of another attempt at a rebuild this week.

“I don’t know if I really understand what that means yet,” he said.
