Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Episode 53 - Deron Quint

2 months ago  /  Lighthouse Hockey

At long last - an actual former Islander. A life in hockey took him all over the world, but some of Deron Quint’s best memories come from his five games on Long Island in 2007. Mike and Dan kick off Season Four with their first actual former Islander, as defenseman Deron Quint joins them to discuss his five games with the team during their 2007 stretch run, his long hockey career in the NHL and overseas and his new second career.
Quint was brought over from Europe by Garth Snow with the Islanders in desperate straights to make the playoffs. What followed was an incredible run that Quint remembers well and fondly as one of the most fun times of his hockey life.
Before and after that short stay, the New Hampshire native experienced a ton, like setting records in his rookie season with the Winnipeg Jets, moving with the team to a new market in Phoenix, uniting with the expansion Blue Jackets, and winning championships in Germany and accolades in Russia. Quint tells us how his perspective changed over the years and why his Islanders time is still so important to him.
Along the way we hear stories about some of the stars he played with including Jeremy Roenick, Alexei Zhamnov, Teppo Numminen, Evgeny Kuznetsov and... Igor Shesterkin? We can’t get away from that guy.
Our eternal thanks to Deron for coming on with us and sharing his stories. We couldn’t have asked for a better first ever Islander, and his generosity and memory (for games that happened in 2007 and beyond) is incredible. This is just the first of a whole season of great Weird Islanders coming up so don’t miss them.

Quint’s signing with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds as a 17-year-old was a huge deal for the club.
A rookie Deron Quint scores a league record two (2) goals in four (4) seconds against the Edmonton Oilers with a little help from the Winnipeg Arena boards.

More info on his incredible two goals in four seconds as a rookie.
Not only was he part of the last Winnipeg Jets team and first Phoenix Coyotes roster, he was also an expansion Columbus Blue Jacket and one of their most important defensemen.
Quint would become the first Columbus defenseman to score a hat trick, leading the Blue Jackets to a 7-6 win over Florida:

Quint first headed to Europe in 2006, playing for Berlin in the DEL. He would become a Polar Bears legend and help the club to three championships (with a brief stop on Long Island in the middle). Here’s one of his goals for Berlin in 2008 DEL final.
Both he and fellow ex-pat Todd Simpson were playing in Germany and were approached by the Islanders late in the season for defensive help. But Simpson’s suspension in the DEL for abuse of officials was upheld by the NHL and he was declared unable to play. Quint signed a five game contract with the Islanders in March of 2007 and, once he passed through waivers, would play in one of the most memorable games the team has had in the post-Dynasty era.
Here’s an interview from his final season in the KHL, a league that’s clearly very meaningful to him. Here’s a fun compilation of some of his KHL goals.
But, boy, this one is diiiiiiiiiiirty:

In 2019, Quint was inducted into the New Hampshire Legends Hockey Hall of Fame.
