In news that shouldn’t surprise anyone, the 2021-22 recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy has added another accomplish to his growing resume. The Colorado Avalanche are still trying to figure out how to return to Stanley Cup-winning form, but if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, Cale Makar continues to be in a league of his own.
We’d say that’s a rather impressive month from ⭐️ Cale Makar ⭐️ pic.twitter.com/LEoJQHZ7H8— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) November 1, 2024
Makar (4-15—19 in 11 GP) became the second defenseman in NHL history — joining Bobby Orr in 1973-74 (8-16—24 in 15 GP w/ BOS) – to post a season-opening point streak of at least 11 games. He also shares the league lead in points with Mark Stone of the Vegas Golden Knights with 19.
Makar also finished the month of October topping the league in assists (15), power play assists (8) and power play points (t-9). Although the season is still very fresh, the 26-year-old has already produced six multi-point performances and became the third-fastest blueliner in NHL history to reach the 350-point mark.
Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday Cale 'Goal Scorer' Makar. Happy birthday to you!#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/RwgGSuEINd— Colorado Avalanche (@Avalanche) October 31, 2024
He reached the feat in 322 games trailing only Orr (306 GP) and Paul Coffey (319 GP). Makar’s average of 1.09 points per game is the second-highest in League history, once again, trailing just Orr (1.39).
And with Makar being as young as he is, there’s still plenty of time for him to catch Orr and perhaps surpass him in the aforementioned categories. If he can keep this rate of production up, there’s no doubt the Canadian will see additional first-star and Norris Trophy honors in his arsenal. And if Colorado can get it together on both sides of the puck, there’s hope for another Stanley Cup title down the line.
Make that 11 straight games with a point for Cale Makar, who just put himself on an exclusive all-time list.#NHLStats: https://t.co/xMCXrILoNZ pic.twitter.com/hs7hWgriLZ— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) October 31, 2024
