After a day's deliberation, the Squamish Nation has chosen not to endorse a message the Canucks released this week. The Squamish Nation have confirmed to Postmedia that they do not support a statement released on their behalf Thursday by the Vancouver Canucks. We do not support the statement released,” said Syetaxtn and Khelsilem, the two spokespersons for the Squamish Nation, in an email. Instead, the Squamish council made a statement of their own on the situation: “We have a long-standing positive relationship with the Canucks and the Aquilini family, and look forward to coming together for further discussions around how best to respect and honour the three host Nations upon whose territory they work and live.”

The statement released by the Canucks on Thursday and attributed to the “Three Host Nations Chiefs of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations,” said: “We feel it is important to come forward and make a statement highlighting the long-standing relationship between the host nations and the Vancouver Canucks as well as the Aquilini family.

The Squamish Nation received a draft of the statement that was prepared by the Canucks team and later released.

Notably, neither the statement released by the Canucks, nor the statement released by the Squamish Nation, make a comment about the Canucks’ orca logo, although separate statements released Thursday by Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini and chief operating officer Trent Carroll both mentioned the logo was supported by their “First Nations friends,” though neither message directly named any of the three host nations.
