Flyers prospect report: Phantoms back in action
Heather Barry / SB Nation
No more breaks please. Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments.
Prospects playing in the AHL
Tanner Laczynski C), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
3/21 - 2 goals, 3 SOG
At long last! It feels like we’ve been saying for a while now that Laczynski’s first pro goal is right around the corner, with how many good chances he was generating, but Sunday’s game finally saw him cash in and break the dam. The floodgates really were opened, and on top of that first goal in regulation, Laczynski picked up the overtime winner as well.
Mason Millman (LHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall
3/21 - did not play
David Kase (LW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)2015 5th Round Pick, 128th overall
3/21 - 2 SOG
Overall, it was in some ways an uncharacteristically quiet game for Kase. He had a coupe of looks for himself, but overall, not a whole lot going on.
Egor Zamula (LHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)Undrafted
3/21 - 1 assist, 1 SOG
After looking really sharp in his last game, Zamula took a bit of a step back on this one. He did pick up an assist, but he was also a little turnover prone, one of which immediately led to an odd-man rush for the Penguins and a goal against. Sigh.
Linus Hogberg (LHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
3/21 - 0 SOG
Not a whole lot going on for Hogberg in this one. He didn’t play a poor game, to be clear, but he just wasn’t really terribly noticeable.
Wyatte Wylie (RHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall
3/21 - did not play
Wylie took a shot straight to the mouth in his last game, so he’s missing due to injury.
Zayde Wisdom (C), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2020 4th Round Pick, 94th overall
3/21 - 2 SOG
Wisdom’s cooler streak continued into this week, on the scoresheet at least, but it wasn’t for lack of good work. He had a couple of nice chances in this one, and was absolutely robbed on one of them, with a really dangerous shot in tight.
Maksim Sushko (RW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2019 4th Round Pick, 107th overall
3/21 - 2 SOG
In his second game back from injury, Sushko’s still working on finding his footing again. He had a fine game on Sunday, nothing extraordinary, and was able to contribute a couple of chances for the team.
Matthew Strome (LW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2017 4th Round Pick, 106th overall
3/21 - did not play
Strome’s on the taxi squad now!
Pascal Laberge (C), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2016 2nd Round Pick, 36th overall
3/21 - did not play
Felix Sandstrom (G), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2015 3rd Round Pick, 70th overall
3/21 - 4 GA, 22 saves, .846 save percentage
Sandstrom got the start on Sunday and it was... less than stellar. He did make a couple of really nice saves when his defense left him exposed, but overall his rebound control was pretty rough, and pretty directly contributed to two of those four goals against.
Isaac Ratcliffe (LW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2017 2nd Round Pick, 35th overall
3/21 - 1 assist, 2 SOG
Ratcliffe’s continuing to get settled back in with the Phantoms, and he had himself a solid game on Sunday. He picked up an assist on Tyson Foerster’s goal and a couple of nice chances for himself, and brought quite a bit of jump to his game, to boot.
Tyson Foerster (LW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2020 1st Round Pick, 23rd overall
3/21 - 1 goal, 1 SOG
After picking up his first AHL goal last week, Foerster has certainly stayed hot. He picked up another goal on Sunday, and just really looks to be hitting his stride at the professional level.
Wade Allison (RW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall
3/21 - 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 SOG
Speaking of hot streaks continuing, Wade Allison, hello. He picked up his first pro goal in his first game last week, and then extended his scoring streak to two game on Sunday, with a goal just 14 seconds into the first period. He played this game on a line with Laczynski and Max Willman, and they were looking very dangerous indeed. Lots of good stuff here.
Prospects playing in Canadian junior
Elliot Desnoyers (LW), Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)2020 5th Round Pick, 135th overall
3/20 - 1 goal, 2 SOG
Just one game for Halifax last week, but it was still a good one for Desnoyers, who picked up his 17th goal of the season in their overtime loss to Cape Breton.
Connor McClennon (RW), Winnipeg Ice (WHL)2020 6th Round Pick, 178th overall
3/17 - 2 assists, 2 SOG
3/18 - 1 assist, 7 SOG
3/21 - 1 goal, 1 assist, 10 SOG
Another very solid week for McClennon and Winnipeg. He picked up five points and 19 shots over those three games, and boy does he ever seem to be hitting the ground running this season.
Prospects playing in Europe
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynas IF (SHL)2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
3/18 - 3 GA, 22 saves, .880 save percentage
3/20 - 1 GA, 25 saves, .962 save percentage
It was sort of a mixed bag of a week for Ersson—he let in three goals in his first start and was pulled, but then he came back in the next game and was really sharp, only letting in one goal in Brynas’ win over HV71.
Olle Lycksell (C), Färjestad IF (SHL)2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
No games for Färjestad last week, but they’re scheduled to be back in action on Saturday.
Matej Tomek (G), KalPa (Liiga)2015 3rd Round Pick, 90th overall
3/19 - did not play
Emil Andrae (LHD), Vasterviks IK (HockeyAllsvenskan)2020 2nd Round Pick, 54th overall
No games last week. Vasterviks are back at it tonight against Södertälje.
Marcus Westfalt (C), Vasterviks IK (HockeyAllsvenskan)2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
No games last week. Vasterviks are back at it tonight against Södertälje.
Prospects playing in NCAA
Cam York (LHD), University of Michigan (Big Ten)2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
No games last week. Michigan will face UMD in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver (NCHC)2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
Denver wasn’t selected for the NCAA Tournament, so their season is over.
Ronnie Attard (RHD), Western Michigan University (NCHC)2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
Western Michigan wasn’t selected for the NCAA Tournament, so their season is over too.
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota (Big Ten)2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Minnesota will face Omaha in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Jack St. Ivany (RHD), Boston College (Hockey East)2018 4th Round Pick, 112th overall
3/17 - 1 assist. 1 SOG
Boston College was eliminated in the semi-final of the Hockey East tournament on Wednesday, and what a wild game it was, especially for St. Ivany. He picked up an assist on Alex Newhook’s first goal of the game, and come overtime, it looked like he’d pulled off a really stellar overtime winning goal, doing a bit of a spin move to avoid a defender and then beating the UMass Lowell goalie with an absolutely blast from the point... but it turned out, through no fault of his, the entry before the goal was offside and the goal came back. And then UMass Lowell won it in double overtime. But hey, we still appreciate St. Ivany’s effort—it was a great play, even if the goal didn’t end up counting.
BC will face Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Jay O’Brien (C), Boston University (Hockey East)2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
Boston University will face St, Cloud State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota (NCHC)2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
North Dakota will face American International in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth (NCHC)2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
UMD will face Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (there’s an echo in here!)...
