Playoff Gm4 Recap: Jets @ Blues

2 days ago  /  Arctic Ice Hockey  /  Read Time: 3 minutes 23 seconds

Heading into Game 4 of their opening playoff round match up against the St. Louis Blues, the Winnipeg Jets have a slim 2 to 1 lead over their division rivals. Yet it is the hometown club that might have a slight advantage over our visiting True Northers at this point of the series, thanks to the results of the last contest. So which franchise would be the one to come out on top on Sunday afternoon???

GAME RECAP

When the puck dropped, the Blues had a couple good shifts in a row that saw their aggressive forecheck create a turnover and allowed them to test the Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck early from the low slot. After that though, it was the Jets who took control of the puck possession as they dominated the flow of play in the 1st period (12-5 WPG in shots). Aided by a couple powerplay opportunities, Winnipeg was able to spend large chunks of time in St. Louis’ zone, but they were limited to shot attempts from the perimeter for the most part. Eventually the True Northers’ forecheck paid off when they won a race on a dump in to start a cycle by sending the puck to the point for Dylan Samberg. The defender had no lane to the net, so shot the puck wide allowing it to bounce off the back boards to Cole Perfetti at the net side. Young Fetts ended up missing a partially open net in his rush to get the shot off, but it once again banked off the back boards, this time going to Kyle Connor at the other side of the net. The Jets’ best sniper calmly took the puck out front, before he backhanded a shot through a defenseman’s legs to open up the scoring. WPG 1-0. The Blues picked up their pace in the final 5 minutes and that allowed them to finally get some offensive zone time. Hellebuyck was called upon to make a huge stop on St. Louis’ Brayden Schenn when he had a glorious look from the low right slot. Winnipeg came close to clearing the zone to ease the pressure, but Colton Parayko was able to barely hold the puck in at the blueline as he whipped a high shot towards the net. Unfortunately, this allowed a Blues’ forward to deflect the shot just two feet in front of Bucky, sending the puck diving down and into the net with just 22 seconds left on the clock. TIE 1-1.

The first half of the 2nd period saw the franchises both struggle to create offense, but that all changed shortly after the midway point. Another St. Louis cycle saw a point-to-point pass that allowed a 1 timer to slip by Brandon Tanev and beat a screened Hellebuyck up high. STL 2-1. Shortly after, Winnipeg had to kill off a penalty and they did a very good job of it. Unfortunately, on a rush as the guilty Jet player got out of the sin bin, Samberg ended up out of position and that saw the Blues have a 2 on 1 advantage in a net front battle to increase their lead. STL 3-1. Things continued to go badly a minute later when a point shot going wide of the net deflected off Neal Pionk’s backside to bounce into the yawning cage. STL 4-1.

An early St. Louis goal in the 3rd period saw Hellebuyck get pulled for the second straight playoff game. STL 5-1. The rest of the frame was not very eventful, as the Jets continued to have difficulties finding a way to create good scoring opportunities and the Blues were more than happy to sit back and wait for the final horn.

The series is now deadlocked after four matches, making it a best of 3 game series to determine which team will head to the 2nd round of the post-season. The home team has won every game in the series to date, so that could potentially give Winnipeg a key advantage with 2 more contests booked at the Canada Life Centre.

A couple days of rest should allow the Jets to get Gabriel Vilardi back in the lineup and hopefully that can re-ignite the Jets’ scoring touch for Game 5.
