NHL Free Agency: Hurricanes Deciding on Pending UFA Taylor Hall's Future
Taylor Hall might have seemed like an afterthought in the shocking three-team Mikko Rantanen trade that the Carolina Hurricanes pulled off back in January. Rantanen is long gone now, but Hall has been proving his worth to the Canes, and the two sides are now discussing a contract extension, according to Daily Faceoff insider Jeff Marek on The Sheet. Taylor Hall has been excellent for the Carolina Hurricanes, putting up nine points in his last eight games. Early on, when he first joined the Canes and the production wasn’t there, the underlying numbers were pointing towards a breakout with the team. And here we are. This is a good fit, and it should come as no surprise that two sides are working towards an extension.Hall is coming off a four-year, $6 million AAV contract that he signed with the Boston Bruins in 2021. He was acquired by Chicago via trade before the 2023-24 season, but due to an injury that wiped out most of that campaign for him, his tenure in the Windy City lasted a total of just 56 games, with 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points. As Marek noted, Hall's arrival in Carolina didn't exactly light the hockey world on fire, as he had just two points in his first 12 games. Luckily for Hall, all eyes were on Rantanen and his lack of a fit with the Hurricanes, so it allowed him to adjust to his new surroundings and a new system while flying under the radar. Since then, he has nine points in eight games, including a hat trick on Sunday. It was his second of the year, after going 11 seasons between hat tricks.TAYLOR HALL WITH THE THREE-WAY HAT-TRICK!Hall found twine on the power play, at five-on-five, and with an empty net, securing his sixth career NHL hat-trick and his first with the Carolina HurricanesHis last hatty was just on November 27, 2024, against the Dallas Stars while… pic.twitter.com/mcFq8BG8bN— Queen of the Puck (@rbarkleyhockey) March 24, 2025Hall, 33, was the Hart Trophy winner back in 2017-18, when he recorded 39 goals and 93 points with the New Jersey Devils.
