Report: Stars Looking At Contract Extensions For Two Newly-Acquired Players
The Dallas Stars are reportedly interested in extending the contracts of recently acquired forward Mikael Granlund and defenseman Cody Ceci, according to Elliotte Friedman. Both players are in the final year of their deals and are set to become unrestricted free agents after this season.Granlund, 32, carries a $5 million cap hit, while Ceci, 31, has a $3.25 million cap hit. The Stars acquired both players in a trade with the San Jose Sharks, sending back a 2025 1st-Round Pick and a conditional 2025 3rd-Round Pick.Mikael Granlund’s 1st point as a Dallas Star is an assist to Logan Stankoven. #TexasHockey pic.twitter.com/IaKgVpjoVr— NHL News (@PuckReportNHL) February 3, 2025 Granlund has provided steady offensive production and this season with the Sharks, and looks like he'll fit well within the Stars' system after one game where he recorded an assist, two shots, and two hits across 16:40 of ice time. His ability to play center or wing gives head coach Pete DeBoer flexibility in the lineup. Ceci recorded four goals, 15 total points, a -9 plus/minus rating, and 101 blocked shots across 54 games with the Sharks this season. Dallas appears to want to keep both players beyond this season, making contract extensions a logical step. Cody Ceci, acquired by DAL, is a veteran depth defenceman. If the team does move forward with extensions for Granlund and Ceci, the terms will need to match up with their long-term salary cap plans. As of now, the Stars currently have eight pending UFAs on their active roster, along with four RFAs.With the Stars already expressing interest in contract extensions for both players just one game into their tenure with the Stars, negotiations could begin sooner rather than later.Photo Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images...
