Insider Shuts Down Rumor Circulating About Hurricanes' Dmitry Orlov

1 week ago  /  NHL Trade Rumors

Insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet has put an end to speculation that veteran defenseman Dmitry Orlov might be heading back to Russia next season. In his latest 32 Thoughts column, Friedman reported that despite rumors linking the 33-year-old to the KHL, “there was no truth to that rumor. Orlov intends to stay in the NHL.” The Carolina Hurricanes blueliner is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after signing a two-year deal worth $15.5 million in 2023.Like it or not, Dmitry Orlov will be in the NHL next year. Orlov has had a steady season in Carolina, recording six goals and 26 points in 71 games while averaging 20 minutes of ice time and leading all Hurricanes defensemen in hits with 97. While the Hurricanes have the cap space to bring him back, any new deal would likely come at a lower annual value than his current $7.75 million cap hit. If Carolina doesn’t re-sign him, Orlov is expected to draw interest from multiple teams looking for a reliable, physical top-four presence with playoff experience."I think everybody happy for him and you know it's excitement"Dmitry Orlov got the mic during the first intermission interview, discussing the first twenty minutes, Alex Ovechkin, and his returning teammates#RaiseUp #NHL pic.twitter.com/g2QngIcBZX— Queen of the Puck (@rbarkleyhockey) April 9, 2025
This season marks Orlov’s 13th in the NHL, having previously suited up for the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins before joining Carolina. Bringing a blend of physicality and puck movement, he remains a valuable option for clubs looking to shore up their blue line. With Friedman’s report confirming Orlov’s desire to remain in North America, the attention now turns to which team might secure his services when free agency opens.Photo Credit: Matt Blewett-Imagn Images...
