The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that the team will be making a coaching change by firing head coach John Tortorella. Associate Coach Brad Shaw will take over on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. The Philadelphia Flyers are making a coaching change. Hearing that John Tortorella has stepped down.— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) March 27, 2025This is an interesting move to make a head coaching chance at this point in the season, but I believe it is a good one. It gives the Flyers some time to play out from under Tortorella for some games so Danny Briere, the general manager, can judge the play of the team and individuals with a new look, even if it isn't Shaw moving forward.Briere said, "Today I made a very difficult decision to move on from John as our head coach. John played a vital role in our rebuild. He set a standard of play and re-established what it means to be a Philadelphia Flyer. John's passion on the bench was only equaled by his charitable work in our community. As we move into the next chapter of this rebuild, I felt this was the best for our team to move forward. I'd like to thank John for his tireless work and commitment to the Flyers."There have been some questionable decisions with the lineup throughout this season and prior, like scratching players such as the captain Sean Couturier and young star Matvei Michkov.Tortorella's comments just 36 hours before being fired were, "I'm not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we're at right now."Tortorella did get his team to play hard every night, nobody can deny that. He taught a lot of the young players a certain work ethic that kept the team in the hunt for the playoffs all of last season when expectations were a bottom-5 finish. Over time, his methods do grow tiresome for the players and I think it was the best decision as there still might be a season or two of growing pains for the Flyers.Photo credit: © Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images ...
