Canadiens Hire New General Manager

2 years ago  /  NHL Trade Rumors

Kent Hughes has signed a five-year contract to be the new general manager of the Montreal Canadiens.Hughes has been a player agent for over 25 years, so it's safe to say that he carries a pretty strong resume when it comes to negotiations. With that, he has been representing players like Patrice Bergeron, Kris Letang, Darnell Nurse, Sammy Blais, and Drake Batherson. The Canadiens fired previous GM Marc Bergevin in November and immediately noted that they would take their time choosing their next one. Former NHLers Daniel Briere and Mathieu Darche were both among the finalists, but once Hughes re-entered the picture, the job became his for the taking. Hughes is taking over the Canadiens at a very hard time for the franchise. They currently are at the bottom of the NHL with a 7-25-5 record and are destined to be sellers at the deadline. Needless to say, we could see Hughes make a good amount of deals pretty early on in his tenure with the organization. On a side note, Hughes has two sons currently working toward becoming NHLers. His son Riley is a prospect for the New York Rangers. His other son, Jack (not to be confused with the Devils star), is viewed as one of the top prospects for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.Nevertheless, the Canadiens finally have their new general manager. Let's see how Hughes does from here.Photo Credit: © Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports...
