The Philadelphia Flyers season is essentially over. Not making the playoffs and most fans are wanting them to lose in their remaining games to guarantee a top five draft pick this June. But Wednesday night in New York City provided a little bit of a bright spot for those fans that yearned for a loss instead of the batty 8-5 win over the Rangers that this team earned.

Tyson Foerster capped off his night with his first ever NHL hat trick. A massive accomplishment for the 23-year-old winger and his first two goals — the goals he earned with an opposing goaltender in between the pipes — were scored with a level of power we haven’t seen in a little bit.

Boy, those were a couple of Goals.

With his first of the three goals he scored, Foerster hit the 20-goal mark for the season and considering other factors, it is very impressive. The young winger became the first Flyer since Simon Gagne in 2000 and 2001 to have back-to-back 20-goal seasons in his first two years in the NHL.

Of course, that’s a lot of markers but it is an incredible feat accomplished by a winger that, as his own head coach points out, is relied upon more for his defensive ability than putting the puck in the back of the net.

“Twenty goals is a nice threshold and there’s not many guys that do it,” Flyers coach Brad Shaw said. “Never mind his age, he hasn’t been given a ton of offensive responsibility either, so for him to do it sort of in a checking-line role is probably even more impressive. He’s a real diligent young man, a real pro, mature beyond his years and that shows in his game. Couldn’t be happier for him to get that hat trick tonight.”

Shaw went even further to talk about how he has used Foerster’s line and doesn’t even really think of them as an offensive unit, which makes Wednesday’s game even more impactful.

“He’s always been marked as a scorer,” Shaw said, “but I’ve been impressed with how he’s added to the defensive side. With the penalty kill, with how responsible that line plays at 5-on-5, him with Catesy and Brinker, we put them out there regularly against the other team’s top units and they do a fantastic job. He’s a big part of that and a big part of our defensive conscience. But tonight is a big example of what he can do on the offensive side as well.”

Foerster’s three-goal night now has him at 22 goals and 39 points through 77 games this season, a six-point improvement from last season in the same amount of games played with an even lower average time on ice. He has slowly built on an already solid rookie campaign, and if he grows out of being in a more defensive role, we can hopefully see a little bit of that offense explode in the coming years. There’s more than enough talent and power in his shot to do it....
