The Edmonton Oilers have finally found their identity, their A-plus game, but can they keep it?
In two games against two of the best teams in the NHL, the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Oilers were dominant.
Edmonton beat Washington 4-3 and Tampa 4-1, two huge wins for a team badly in need of any wins.
Most impressively, Edmonton’s game was defined by even strength dominance, one built upon a foundation of sharp and conscientious defensive play and blistering, direct, smokestack lightning attacking.
It was old school firewagon hockey, the kind that we saw from the Montreal Canadiens in the 1970s.
But it was just two games. It could be a blip as much as any kind of trend.
