After Just 7 Minutes, Trent Frederic is Back on the Shelf for the Oilers
After waiting 14 games for their major trade deadline acquisition Trent Frederic to finally make his debut, all it took was seven minutes of ice time for the new Edmonton Oilers forward to go down once again after re-injuring his ankle.FREDERIC OUTTrent Frederic did not take the morning skate in Anaheim today, after re-injuring his ankle Saturday in LA. He is expected to miss tonight’s game against the Ducks.— Mark Spector🇨🇦🇺🇦 (@SportsnetSpec) April 7, 2025Frederic was not available for the morning skate on Monday, and will not play in the Oilers' game against the Anaheim Ducks.According to Sportsnet's Mark Spector, it actually took just six seconds in his return on Saturday before Frederic's high ankle sprain acted up. He had just thrown a big hit on the first shift of the game, and immediately exited, not to return until over 12 minutes into the period. He played several shifts after that for the rest of the first and the second period, but early in the third, after just 7:10 time on ice for the game, that was it. Oilers GM Stan Bowman has provided an update of sorts, saying "It doesn't appear to be serious. I don't have an update on timing at all, nor will I speculate.. But it does not appear to be serious."Coach Kris Knoblauch said to the media: "We feel he'll be fine and be ready for the playoffs, but an immediate return is not going to happen."The gritty forward had already been out for a week back in early March when the Oilers made the deal in a three-team trade to acquire him from the Boston Bruins. With Evander Kane's health and potential return still in question at the time, Frederic was brought in to provide some much-needed beef and sandpaper to the Oilers' mix for the playoffs. They knew they'd have to wait for his high ankle sprain to heal, and were thrilled the 6'3", 220-pound winger was able to return before the end of the regular season. But now they'll have to wait and see what this setback means going forward. Spector says that Frederic originally wasn't scheduled to make his debut for Edmonton until Monday night, but when Leon Draisaitl went out of the lineup once again last Thursday night in San Jose, they pushed up Frederic's return by two days, and inserted him into the lineup this past Saturday. It sounds like a mistake at this point. Photo: © Robert Hanashiro-Imagn Images...
