3 Offseason Targets For Toronto Maple Leafs

9 hours ago  /  NHL Trade Rumors

The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to have big offseason responsibilities and I really don't think Mitch Marner is going to be able to come back and the team adequately addresses the depth. If you were in control of the Maple Leafs, would you rather a winger be overpaid and the top of the lineup be even more heavily relied upon, or grab a couple of good players in place and match the deep teams Toronto always has to go up against in the playoffs?Jonathan DrouinJonathan Drouin might be done in Colorado as there are a lot of available players for the Avalanche. As a former high draft pick who can produce and skate, he would be a great fit on the wing of the second line with John Tavares and William Nylander who can both score. Drouin is better at dishing the puck and won't be overly expensive, but won't exactly be cheap either after scoring 11 goals and 37 points in 43 games while playing with top players.Ryan DonatoI think Ryan Donato should be a target for the Maple Leafs, but I can't see them grabbing both Drouin and a player like Donato. The latter is more versatile and would be able to play up and down the lineup as needed. There have been injury issues with Toronto, so it is a good type of player to have, but every team wants a player like Donato. He had a career year with 32 goals and 64 points, but also had a great opportunity I don't think he'll get in Toronto unless he slots in with the top-6 and on the top power-play unit.Nikolaj EhlersNikolaj Ehlers should definitely be a winger targeted by the Maple Leafs if Marner doesn't re-up. Ehlers is quick, would get the top line minutes he's looking for sliding in beside Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies, and get on the top power play as well. Ehlers is going to be $5+ million per year cheaper than Marner and even though he gets injured, Ehlers can produce at a high rate. He scored 24 goals and 63 points in 69 games this season.Photo credit: © Talia Sprague-Imagn Images...
